The Board of Education is charged with responsibilities delegated by the legislature of the State of Illinois. Within the constraints of numerous state and federal laws, the board:

  • Formulates and adopts District policies.
  • Employs a superintendent and other personnel, determining their compensation and dismissing personnel.
  • Approves the annual budget, tax levies, major expenditures, payment of obligations, annual audit and other aspects of the district’s financial operation.
  • Lets contracts utilizing the public bidding procedure when required.
  • Provides, constructs, controls, supervises and maintains adequate physical facilities.
  • Approves the curriculum, textbooks and educational services.
  • Evaluates the educational program.
  • Establishes student discipline policies.
  • Establishes attendance units within the District and assigns students to the schools.
  • Establishes the school year.
  • Visits and inspects the District’s schools.
  • Provides student transportation services.
  • Communicates the schools’ activities and operations to the community and represents the needs and desires of the community in educational matters.

The seven members of the Board of Education serve without pay. They are elected at large, by vote of District 59 residents, to serve staggered four-year terms. Elections are held in April of odd-numbered years. The next election will be held in 2019. Regular Board meetings are usually held on the second and fourth Monday of each month at 2123 South Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights with the business portion of the meeting normally starting at approximately 7:00 p.m. Special meetings may be scheduled at the call of the Board President or any two Board Members. The Boardroom is physically accessible to those with physical impairments.
