Byrd PTO Sponsors Meets and Sweets
Is there a better way to spend a Friday night besides talking to friends and letting kids play together? By adding in ice cream!
Thanks to the Admiral Byrd PTO, the Ice Cream Social on Friday, September 8, had plenty of both – sweets and socialization, for the almost 400 people who attended.
The PTO-sponsored event was Byrd’s own “welcome back to school” party for students and families and offered them an opportunity to socialize. The event was completely funded by the Byrd PTO and was free of charge to all who attended. “We feel the PTO has been blessed by the generosity of current and former Byrd parents,” said Byrd PTO President Mike Griffin, “and this was our way of paying it forward for the upcoming school year.”
As was the case for the past few years, the ice cream was provided at a low cost by the McDonald’s on Biesterfield in Elk Grove. The PTO provided all the tempting toppings.
In addition to the chance to share some sweets, the event provided some additional highlights for those who attended. The PTO organized and accepted donations for the Hurricane Harvey Relief effort and collected last minute spirit wear order forms.
An awesome banner, created by the Byrd PTO and Ebersold, Inc. of Downer’s Grove, with the new Byrd ‘50-year’ logo was also rolled out for the first time. Artist Kent Ebersold came up with the idea of using the penguin’s feet with the bicentennial years, 1967 and 2017, in the logo. The banner will now be displayed inside Byrd’s main hallway where everyone can see it as they enter.
Griffin said the event provided a great opportunity for Byrd staff, students, and their families to all interact at the same time, which is something everyone looks forward to.
The students agreed. When asked what he would like to see different next year, first grader CJ Magner enthusiastically responded, “more time!”
