Forest View Students Get in the Holiday Spirit
December 12, 2016
During this time of year, the warm spirit of generosity can make the cold winter weather feel a little less frosty.
On Thursday, December 8, a field trip to the Walmart in Rolling Meadows got the Forest View student senate in the spirit of the holidays. A team of nine student senate members each had a cart and a slip of paper with the age and gender of a child in a Forest View family that needed a little help.
All of the senate members, along with two helpful teachers, Mrs. Holloman and Mrs. Kudla, shopped on behalf of a child they’d never met. Happy discussions of “Do you think a six year old would like this?” and “I think that’s so cool, you should totally get it!” were heard throughout the Walmart store as students collaborated on strategies for getting the best gifts for the lowest price. Throughout every aisle, it was impressive to never hear any mention at all about what the students wanted for themselves, but instead, great enthusiasm about what would be the best gifts for those on their lists.
Forest View’s PTO funds the project every year. The experience of actually doing the shopping, new to the student senate this year, was greatly enjoyed by all in attendance. Students embraced the joy of altruism, smart planning and budgeting, and teamwork. One student, Monica, reflected and gave a voice to the thought, “Boy, now I know what it feels like to be a mom and have to try to figure out what everybody likes!”
