Holmes Students Win Big in ‘Play 60’ Challenge
CCSD59 would like to congratulate Holmes Junior High School for winning first place in the 2017 Chicago Bears/American Heart Association ‘Play 60’ Challenge.
The contest encouraged students to get physically active each day, both in physical education class as well as outside of the school day. Students and staff were very creative in finding ways to include brain breaks and activities during classes to help win the contest. Aside from the many health benefits to students and staff, Holmes also won the grand prize in the contest: $10,000 to support and expand health and fitness programming at the school.
According to Will Hogan, assistant principal at Holmes, the funds will be used to increase activity and overall health-related fitness programs, and may include purchasing devices such as heart monitors.
4,740,028 minutes of exercise were logged by 2,430 students from all schools who participated in the contest, according to Youth Market Director Allison Henley at the American Heart Association.
Congratulations to the Holmes students, the PE Department, and all staff who supported the school by playing their part in the 2017 Chicago Bears/American Heart Association Play 60 Challenge!
