Students Learn the Importance of Bike Safety
Student safety is a top priority at CCSD59, and whether students are at our buildings or off site, we want them to know and follow good safety practices. Since many enjoy riding bicycles, bike safety is no exception, and some of our students are afforded the opportunity to attend the Bicycle Safety Program provided by Elk Grove Township. CCSD59 students have been attending the program for nearly 30 years.
On September 27, second grade students at Brentwood Elementary rode the bike safety practice course, located next to the Township building. Smiles lit up the morning as they practiced best safety practices with their classmates outside on a beautiful fall day. Proper riding techniques, hazard recognition, and traffic awareness are learned while riding in order to help prevent accidents.
The bicycle safety program is a two-part program that first consists of an in-class presentation, which explains the meaning of street markings, signs, hand signals, and other important safety information. During the second part, students ride the bike safety practice course and have a hands-on experience while practicing what they learned.
To help promote the importance of wearing a bicycle helmet, the program donates one helmet to each class that attends which can be raffled off by the teacher.
Sandy Henmueller, who runs the program at Elk Grove Township says, “We hope that when children finish the program, they leave with an excitement for bike riding that will entice them to want to get outside, ride a bike, and have a love of riding that will last them a lifetime.”
