COVID-19 Update (March 14, 2020)

CCSD59 Families,

The decision to close schools was made as a preventative measure to help contain the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus. Governor Pritzker also announced that all Illinois schools are mandated to close starting Tuesday, March 17 through Monday, March 30, 2020. The safety and health of our students, staff, families, and community is always our top priority.

While we know this closure will present difficulties for families, we believe it is a necessary step to help minimize the potential for community spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus. An e-learning plan will allow our students to continue to engage in learning and stay connected to their teachers during this time off. However, we also understand there may be some additional challenges/stresses for our families due to the nature of the plan. Below are some of the anticipated challenges and potential solutions:

Food and Nutrition
If your child(ren) will be in need of nutritious food next week, there are two options to receive breakfasts and lunches. These options are available for all children in your family. Breakfast will be provided Tuesday, March 17 through Friday, March 20. Lunch will be provided Monday, March 16 through Friday, March 20. While we are glad we are able to provide this support to our families during this temporary change, we want to acknowledge that this is a new service for us, so we are trying to anticipate the numbers of meals that will be needed.

  • Option 1: For ALL Students, ALL Schools
    You may pick up breakfast and lunch from one of the following pick up locations and estimated times (all a.m.). CCSD59 will have a bus parked in front of the building with the breakfast and lunch available for pickup.

    • Byrd 11:25 – 11:35
    • Devonshire 11:25 – 11:35
    • Frost 11:25 – 11:35
    • Jay 11:25 – 11:35
    • Low 11:25 – 11:35
    • Rupley 11:25 – 11:35
    • Salt Creek 11:25 – 11:35
    • Friendship 10:25 – 10:35
    • Grove 10:25 – 10:35
    • Holmes 10:25 – 10:35
  • Option 2: For students of Byrd, Devonshire, Frost, Jay, Low, Rupley, Salt Creek, Friendship, Grove, and Holmes only (Clearmont, Brentwood, Forest View, and Ridge families should follow Option 1, as this option includes special education students).
    If your child rides the bus, you may meet the bus at the usual stop at exactly three hours later than your typical pickup time to get a lunch for that day and breakfast for the next day. For example, if your pickup is at 7:40 a.m. your food pickup will be at 10:40 a.m. Busses will run consistent routes every day, Monday, March 16 through Friday, March 20.

Internet Access
If access to internet will be a challenge for you, here are some potential solutions to consider:

  • Connect the device through a cell phone hotspot (if you have sufficient data).
  • Starting Monday, March 16th Comcast Internet Essentials will start a program allowing free 60 day access to families that qualify. To see if you qualify, you can call 1-855-846-8376. Even if it cannot be provided in our school closing time frame, this is a good service to get set up for the future.
  • See if a neighbor or friend will allow your child to access their WiFi.
  • If none of these are an option, please contact your school to problem solve other possible solutions.

Work packets and materials could potentially be sent to you.For questions about food, internet, or other needs you can contact our Community Outreach Team using the Cares Hotline, (847) 593-7565, or email address, care@ccsd59.org. A team member will then reach out to you at their earliest convenience. You can also access our online directory of services at care.ccsd59.org.

In the event that your student was absent on Friday and was unable to take their device home, please contact the school office to make arrangements for pick up on Monday. You will receive more information about eLearning and other updates from staff at your child’s school on Monday, March 16. Thank you.

La decisión de cerrar las escuelas se está tomando como medida preventiva para ayudar a contener la propagación del coronavirus COVID-19. El gobernador Pritzker también anunció que todas las escuelas de Illinois tienen el mandato de cerrar empezando el martes 17 de marzo hasta el lunes 30 de marzo de 2020. La seguridad y la salud de nuestros estudiantes, personal, familias y comunidad es siempre nuestra prioridad primordial. Sabemos que este cierre puede presentará dificultades para las familias, pero creemos que es un paso necesario para ayudar a minimizar el potencial de propagación comunitaria del coronavirus COVID-19. Un plan de eLearning (Aprendizaje en línea) permitirá a nuestros estudiantes continuar participando en el aprendizaje y mantenerse conectados con sus maestros durante este tiempo. Sin embargo, también entendemos que puede haber algunos desafíos/tensiones adicionales para nuestras familias debido a la naturaleza del plan. Comida y Nutrición 
Si su(s) hijo(s) necesitarán alimentos nutritivos la próxima semana, hay dos opciones para recibir desayunos y almuerzos. Estas opciones están disponibles para todos los niños de su familia. Opción 2: Para los estudiantes que asisten a las siguientes escuelas: Byrd, Devonshire, Frost, Jay, Low, Rupley, Salt Creek, Friendship, Grove, y Holmes solamente. (Las familias de Clearmont, Brentwood, Forest View y Ridge deben seguir la opción 1. Si su hijo toma el autobús, puede esperar en su parada habitual justo tres horas después de la hora habitual que pasa el autobús para recoger un almuerzo ese día y el desayuno para el día siguiente. Por ejemplo: si el autobús recoge a los estudiantes en la parada habitualmente a las 7:40am, el autobús pasará a las 10:40am para que puedan recoger la comida. Los autobuses harán sus rutas consistentes todos los días, lunes, 16 de marzo a viernes, 20 de marzo.

Acceso a internet
Si el acceso a internet será un desafío para usted, a continuación encontrará algunas posibles soluciones para considerar:

  • Conecte el dispositivo a través de un punto de acceso de su teléfono celular (si su plan tiene suficiente datos)
  • A partir el lunes, 16 de marzo Comcast Internet Essentials ofrecerá un programa que permitirá el acceso gratuito a internet por 60 días a las familias que califiquen. En caso de que su estudiante faltó a la escuela el viernes 13 de Marzo y no pudo llevar su dispositivo a casa, comuníquese con la oficina de la escuela para que lo pueda recoger el lunes 16 de Marzo.  El lunes, recibirá más información sobre e-Learning (Aprendizaje en línea) y otras actualizaciones del personal de la escuela de su hijo.
