Mask Guidelines

Mask Guidelines

The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) has adopted guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) requiring all teachers, staff, students, and visitors to pre-K-12 schools to wear a mask while indoors, regardless of vaccination status. This guidance is based on updated recommendations in CDC guidance for COVID-19 prevention in K-12 schools and an updated state executive order.

Face coverings must also be worn in the following settings:

  • any CCSD59 extracurricular event
  • when riding the bus

Masks may be temporarily removed at school in the following circumstances:

  • when eating.
  • for staff when alone in classrooms or offices with the door closed.
  • for staff and students when they are outdoors (unless returning on day six after quarantining as a positive COVID-19 case)

The following categories of people may be exempted from the requirement to wear a mask:

  • Children under 2 years of age.
  • A person who cannot wear a mask or cannot safely wear a mask because of a disability as defined by the ADA (42 U.S.C. 12101 et seq.).
