New artwork brightens the day at Devonshire
Strolling the hallways of Devonshire Elementary is becoming a vibrant experience, featuring student versions of the works of Monet and O’Keefe. This budding gallery walk is a welcome site for fellow Knights, and it’s largely thanks to new art teacher Nichol Novoselsky and the lessons her students have put onto paper.
“Everybody can see your creativity, your work, your ideas, and we get compliments about them,” said Nicholas, a fifth grade student.
Students beam proudly at the opportunity for their projects to be on display every time they change classes or enter the building. It is a testament to what they have learned, and the process can be seen in real time.
For Novoselsky, the best approach is that there are no mistakes in art, only continuations in the process. Her method resonates with students, who find comfort in knowing there is space for growth and improvement while they learn.
“She takes things step-by-step and gives us plenty of time to complete them. Sometimes it’s day-by-day, sometimes everything is on the same day, but she goes slow enough for us to always understand,” said Nicholas. “I enjoy all the new styles of art I’ve been learning (blending, tinting, and shading).”
Seeing Impressions of Rouen Cathedral, rainbow lilies, flower abstractions, or even simple penguins has made an impression on staff as well. They shared how much they enjoy the additions and how the student work is creating a colorful atmosphere.
“During the height of COVID-19, when the walls were bare, I realized how much I missed looking at the student work throughout the school,” said Tess Semke, a fellow Devonshire teacher. “(Ms. Novoselsky) and her students have worked hard in her classes, and each art project has been displayed in a different section of the school.”
Students are also invited to write artist statements to show how they reached their finished product and what inspired them along the way. It has filled students with confidence as they continue to improve and develop an appreciation for their work.
“Even if you aren’t as good as others, we are encouraged to find ways to make our art better,” said Sophia, a fourth grade student. “Ms. Novoselsky is always complimenting us and showing us ways that make sense. It helps us love art, and we get to show off our creativity and what we can do.”
