HOW TO READ a graduated cylinder correctly.  Define what VOLUME is  –  the amount of space an object takes up.  Liquid volumes can be measured with a graduated cylinder.  Explain what the word GRADUATED means.  Most common unit of volume used in science class is the milliliter  (mL).  Next most common unit is the liter (L).

Use ratio and proportion to help determine smaller units of volume on the graduated cylinder.

5 whole units / divided into 20 smaller units  =  what part of a whole unit  /  1 mailer unit value.

Provide practice in reading volume scales and volume in graduated cylinder.  Worksheet to follow.
