The Rules: In other words, how your student can succeed in Art.
1. Be PREPARED.
*Students should always be on time to class.
*Students should bring all supplies needed, especially a pencil.
*Students should try their best and do it with a good attitude.
2. Be RESPECTFUL.
*Treat everyone (teachers, students and guests) how they want to be treated.
*Treat the room, equipment and supplies with respect.
*Ask before they take or touch.
3. Be SAFE.
*Keep their hands and feet to themselves at all times.
*Listen and follow all classroom directions and procedures.
*Use all equipment and supplies properly and safely.

Assignments:
Students are usually given plenty of time to complete all their artwork in class. I assign very little homework, as it can be difficult to send art supplies home for students. When I do assign homework, it is usually something that can be easily taken home. I give students many opportunities to make up missed work. It is their responsibility to make arrangements for late work.

Late Work:
Students are expected to turn in their homework on the assigned due date. Late work is marked down. I generally do not accept work that is more than a week late, unless it is a special circumstance.
*If students are absent for any reason, they need to make sure they see me to get the work they missed.
*If work is too messy to send home for a student to finish, they need to make arrangements to finish it during study hall, lunch, or before or after school.

Art Supply List:
Students do not have to bring anything for art,
except… A PENCIL.
*They are welcome to bring their own supplies, such as colored pencils, markers, crayons, etc., if they prefer to have their own personal materials. I can provide a place in class to store them.

*All students are asked to donate a container of baby wipes, bleach wipes, or hand wipes to the room, if possible.

What is your student working on this year? In art, we concentrate on teaching the elements and principles, as well as making sure that students get to experience a wide variety of media such as painting, sculpture, drawing, and printmaking. Vocabulary, art history and different art techniques are also taught. Students will learn about why art is important to their daily lives, careers related to the arts, and how art can be used to express themselves. Please visit my website for a more detailed break down of the curriculum!

Above all, I want the Art room to be a place students can feel safe in so that they can explore their creativity and learn new things. I like to emphasize to students that they might not all be best friends, or even like everyone, but they ARE able to show respect to ALL PEOPLE, and should do so. Junior high is a time of great change in your students life, and they need to feel safe to explore their interests and learn new things in a positive environment.
Also, please reassure your student that even if they think they are “bad” at art, they are here to learn. A major portion of their grade is effort! The whole point of them being in this class is to learn new things and expand their creativity. Learning to think creatively is an excellent skill for your student to learn which will help them be successful in other classes, not just art!
