Why Music?Why Music?

Advocacy for the Arts in Education

I believe that every child is entitled to a strong education.  No education is complete without the knowledge of the arts, and the affections, including music.  As a music educator, I teach life, with music as the background.  By participating in music, children become part of a team that sings, plays instruments, and makes music together.  This team has all kinds of players, as music can be for anyone, regardless of ability, gender, age, developmental level, race, and prior knowledge.  The one thing all of these students share is their participation in the arts and music, where they will not only gain musical knowledge, but also grow as an individual and develop strength in character.  Through music education, youth learn social interactions, and communicative and expressive means.  They learn through their collaboration with others, therefore strengthening their abilities to interact with their peers.  Critical thinking skills and creativity are part of everyday lessons in arts education.  Individually, a child’s own strengths emerge through their successes in the classroom.  Children who have not “made any other teams” can make music and as a result grow in many ways including confidence, social skills, character, musical knowledge, and talent.  Thank you for your support.
