General music classes at Friendship Jr. High School are part of the fine arts rotation for some students.

Needed Supplies:  Notebook paper, pencil, folder, earbuds/headphones, school issued tablet/chrome book.

6th Grade Curriculum:  6th Grade General music will sample both 7th and 8th Grade Curriculums as well as expand on American Music.  During this unit students will uncover many genres of American music, from folk songs and patriotic music, to jazz, broadway, and rock music!  They will learn to be critical thinkers as they listen to and analyze a variety of music, often communicating their discoveries through collaborative projects

Curriculums 

1) Do you Uke?  Discovering Ukuleles – The quarter will begin by covering basic notation, and history and basics of the instrument necessary to become successful players.  Later, students will learn songs led by Mrs. Zolmierski, as well as songs of their choosing.  They will play both chords, and melody, as well as explore the instrument creatively.  There will be many opportunities to collaborate with their peers as they develop musicianship and performing skills.  They will listen to and analyze ukulele music from a variety of genres and performers, and transfer their ideas to their own playing.

2) Around the World in 9 Weeks – World Music & Drumming – During this percussion based unit, students will discover music from a country on each continent.  Students will collaborate with each other as they play a variety of instruments while immersed in the culture of each of the countries of study.  Students will practice critical thinking skills as they listen to and analyze music from around the world.  As a final project, students can select an area to further study and chose one of the project options including instrument recreation and creative composition, research based poster project, or a technology integrated project.
