What are Occupational Therapy (OT) services?
Occupational therapy provides specialized interventions that support students’ independence and participation in their education. School-based occupational therapy services are provided to develop and increase daily living, fine motor, and sensory skills so that students can participate in meaningful and purposeful educational activities. Occupational therapists work together with the family and educational team to identify the supports, modifications, and accommodations that are needed for the student to access their education with improved outcomes.
Who would benefit from OT Services?
Usually, occupational therapy is provided to students with disabilities, but other children who are having specific problems in school may also benefit from occupational therapy. OT practitioners also consult with teachers on how classroom design affects attention, why children may behave inappropriately at certain times, and where to best seat a child based on learning style or other needs. Occupational therapy may be recommended for an individual student for reasons that might be affecting his or learning or behavior, such as motor skills, cognitive processing, visual or perceptual problems, mental health concerns, difficulties staying on task, disorganization, or inappropriate sensory responses.
What is the process for considering OT services?
Educational teams contact the school’s occupational therapist if a suspected need in the areas of fine motor, self-help, or sensory regulation is identified. The OT then participates in discussions with the team to determine if additional support in these areas is needed.

La terapia ocupacional proporciona intervenciones especializadas que apoyan la independencia y la participación de los estudiantes en su educación. Se brindan servicios de terapia ocupacional basados en la escuela para desarrollar y aumentar las habilidades de la vida diaria, motricidad fina y sensoriales para que los estudiantes puedan participar en actividades educativas significativas y decididas. Los terapeutas ocupacionales trabajan en conjunto con la familia y el equipo educativo para identificar los apoyos, modificaciones y adaptaciones que se necesitan para que el alumno acceda a su educación con mejores resultados.
¿QUIÉN SE BENEFICIARÍA DE LOS SERVICIOS DE OT?
Por lo general, la terapia ocupacional se proporciona a los estudiantes con discapacidades, pero otros niños que tienen problemas específicos en la escuela también pueden beneficiarse de la terapia ocupacional. Los practicantes de OT también consultan con los maestros sobre cómo el diseño del salón afecta la atención, por qué los niños pueden comportarse de manera inapropiada en ciertos momentos, y dónde ubicar mejor a un(a) niño(a) según el estilo de aprendizaje u otras necesidades. La terapia ocupacional puede ser recomendada para un estudiante individual por razones que puedan estar afectando su aprendizaje o comportamiento, tales como motricidad, procesamiento cognitivo, problemas visuales o de percepción, problemas de salud mental, dificultades para concentrarse en tareas, desorganización o respuestas sensoriales inapropiadas.
¿CUÁL ES EL PROCESO PARA CONSIDERAR LOS SERVICIOS DE OT?
Los equipos educativos contactan al terapeuta ocupacional de la escuela si se identifica una necesidad sospechada en las áreas de motricidad fina, autoayuda o regulación sensorial. El OT luego participa en las discusiones con el equipo para determinar si se necesita apoyo adicional en estas áreas.
