Building Connection Through Movement & Dance
Five, six, seven, eight. Just like that, Salt Creek Elementary School’s Dance Club comes to life, full of energy, movement, and smiles.
What started as a simple idea quickly turned into something much bigger.
Ms. Nicolette Spanger, a School Resource Assistant at the school, created the Dance Club to give students a chance to experience dance in a fun, welcoming space.
The club first launched with 20 first grade students. Called the “Groovin Gals,” the group learned a full routine, built their confidence, and performed for their families. They also took the stage at the school’s holiday assembly, all beaming with pride.
Their excitement didn’t go unnoticed.
After seeing the joy and confidence the club brought to the first graders, second grade students were eager to join. Soon, 16 students formed the “Second Grade STARS,” continuing the momentum.
No matter the grade level, the experience stayed the same.
Students stretched, practiced basic dance moves, and worked together to learn a full routine. Along the way, they built friendships, supported each other, and shared plenty of laughs. When it was time to perform, they proudly wore their custom t-shirts and dance bows, showing off not just their moves, but their teamwork.
“My main goal was to create a program that let them have fun, move their bodies after school, and form friendships,” said Ms. Spangler.
And that goal came to life in every practice and every performance.
Because while the dances were impressive, what stood out most was something bigger. The sense of connection. Students cheered each other on, stepped outside their comfort zones, and found their place on the floor.
At Salt Creek, Dance Club is about more than learning steps. It’s about building confidence, creating community, and finding joy in every beat.
