What is a School Social Worker?
School social workers (SSW) are an important part of the educational team and they work together with administrators, teachers, counselors, psychologists, nurses, speech and language pathologists and other staff members. Their specialized training in social work allows them to understand and interpret how the complex influences of the school, home, and community affect children. School social workers can help identify factors that can make school a more successful experience.
What do School Social Workers Do?
They help students:
- Get the most from the educational opportunities provided to them
- Understand themselves and others
- Cope with stress
- Learn and develop decision making skills
They help parents/guardians:
- Participate in their children’s education
- Understand their children’s social and emotional needs
- Learn what resources are available to students with special needs
- Utilize school and community resources effectively
They help schools:
- Understand cultural, societal, economic, familial, and health factors that affect students
- Utilize their resources in meeting all needs of students
- Promote a safe school environment
They help communities:
- Understand local school policies, programs, and practice
- Minimize environmental factors that can inhibit learning
- Collectively develop resources to meet the needs of students and families

- Comprender los factores culturales, sociales, económicos, familiares y de salud que afectan a los estudiantes
- Utilizar sus recursos para satisfacer todas las necesidades de los estudiantes
- Promover un ambiente escolar seguro
Ellos ayudan a las comunidades:
- Comprender las políticas, los programas y la práctica de la escuela local
- Minimizar los factores ambientales que pueden inhibir el aprendizaje
- Desarrollar colectivamente recursos para satisfacer las necesidades de los estudiantes y las familias
