Staying Healthy at Home and School

There have already been many illnesses reported to school this year. There are things you can do to at home to prevent the spread of illness at school:

  1. Practice hand washing with your children. They should wash their hands:
  • Before they eat
  • After using the bathroom
  • After using a Kleenex, sneezing or coughing
  • After getting them dirty outdoors or indoors
  • After touching an animal

Remind your children to wash all parts of their hands, front, back, and between their fingers. They should check their nails as well and clean them if they are dirty. Have them sing Happy Birthday to themselves to make sure that they wash their hands long enough.

  1. Teach your children to use a Kleenex properly and not their sleeves when they have a runny nose. Remind them to wash their hands after using a Kleenex.
  1. Teach your children to cover their coughs or sneezes with their elbows and not their hands. Children put their hands everywhere. Germs can transfer from the hands to other surfaces that may be touched by classmates. Germs can also transfer in the air, if the cough is not covered. Again, remind them to wash their hands after sneezing or coughing.
  1. Keep children home when they are sick, if they have a fever greater than 100.0, vomiting, diarrhea, skin rashes, inflamed swollen red eyes, excessive sneezing or coughing. This will prevent illness from spreading to their classmates. Please refer to the School Website and the Student Health Section for detailed information.
  1. If medications are needed at school, please notify the health office at (847) 472-3445. Form H-25 needs to be completed by both parents and doctors before school staff can administer medication. Even over-the-counter medications such as Tylenol and cough drops need doctors’ orders. Medication must be brought to school by parents in the original containers. Students are not allowed to transport medication. Most medication can be administered at home before and after school. Parents may also come to school and administer medication to their children if necessary.

Thank you for keeping Brentwood healthy and safe this year!
